Meet Coco Shop

Cocoshop Pineapple Indoor-Outdoor Fabric - Brown

We recently got to pick the brain of the lovely Taylor Simmons - the brains and beauty behind Coco Shop. Through this process, Taylor has become a dear friend and someone we truly admire in the industry for her passion and creativity! She is as kind as she is smart, and as generous as she is humble. We are grateful to her for trusting us with her brand and her beloved Antiguan patterns! Get to know more about Taylor below.

What's your favorite part of the clothing design process?
My favorite part of my design process is trying on a finished sample and having no notes. It's rare - I typically make many adjustments after sampling - but the excitement that a perfect sample brings after so many months of ideation is unparalleled.
What does Antigua mean to you and your family?
My grandparents built a house in Antigua in 1952 and, ever since, Antigua has been all about family. When we are there, my family does everything together, including all three meals every day. I don't think my grandparents could have ever imagined how much the island would come to affect one of their granddaughters though. In addition to being about family, I have met my closest friends, my husband, and, of course, my job through the island. I'm so lucky.
What has been the biggest highlight of your working career at Coco Shop so far?
The biggest highlights have probably been the times when I've run into someone I don't know wearing something Coco Shop. I'm shy and usually panic and don't say anything, but my husband yells, "my wife made your dress!" I would, honestly, also add this collaboration too. This is my first collaboration and offering Coco Shop prints for home use once again feels like a huge milestone and step forward.
What's your favorite thing about living in the city?
My favorite thing about living in New York is the access - the access to friends, many of whom live a walk away, the access to new restaurants, new exhibits, new activities for kids. You can live as vibrant or as quiet a life as you'd like in New York and I love the variation.
How do you think fashion and interiors relate to each other?
I think they are both ways in which people are able to express who they are. I do think they take different muscles though - I feel comfortable with clothing and uncomfortable with interiors. There is a permanence to interiors that feels very serious. With clothing, you can tailor, you can have more than one, you can sell, you can update. You can wake up every day and decide how you're feeling and how you want to express that. Putting together rooms is so different! I'm very much learning.
How do you balance work and motherhood (not a trick question)?
I think I balance well actually! First, I am lucky to have flexibility with work. I can begin a work day later than usual if I feel I didn't spend enough time with my daughter the previous day. Every weekday begins with my daughter, then I go to work, then I come home to my daughter and then, as soon as she's asleep, I open my laptop again. I cannot multitask - When I am at work, I am at work and when I am with my daughter, I am with my daughter. I love the time with both. Weekends are exclusively with my daughter and I work during her nap-time. What I haven't figured out is how to weave in other things I used to love like exercising and exploring - I have work to do there.

Discover the Collection

In June of 2024, we began riffling through digital files of old Coco Shop patterns developed in Antigua over 50 years ago! We knew we wanted to develop three or four patterns in this Resort Capsule, and that they needed to be varying scales. We were immediately drawn to the large scale Pineapple pattern, as well as the intricate Limes. There were so many lovely patterns to chose from for that perfect mid-scale design, and we ultimately landed on the Breadfruit, which we tweak just a tad (removing some tropical elements and adjusting colors).

After the pattern selection, we began working on a color story and landed on mid-tone blues and greens, rich brown, and dusty rose pink. These colors are reflective of the island of Antigua, but also translate so well into home interiors AND fashion. Finding that perfect balance took time, and we are thrilled with how these colorways turned out.

When it came time to select our grounds for printing, we knew we wanted to consider the outdoors as a possible use for these fabrics. That meant we needed a highly durable, water resistant, and light fast fabric - so, we landed on a 100% polyester that is extremely tough with a topical treatment giving it performance capabilities that stand up to liquids / spills and UV rays! Win, win! And we ALL knew from the beginning that grasscloth was going to be at play here because of the subtle texture and depth it brings. In fact, some of our favorite SKUs in this collection are those on grasscloth!

All in all, this collection encompasses 5 fabric SKUs (all printed on a durable performance ground) and 7 wallcovering SKUs (a mix of clay coated papers and grasscloth). We cannot wait for you to discover a little slice of West Indes heaven!
