Drapery Installation Guide
Beautiful drapery is about more than selecting the perfect fabric—proper installation is what brings each panel to life. From adjusting your hooks to steaming and training your pleats, a few simple finishing steps will help you achieve the tailored, custom look shown throughout our photography. Follow the guide below for our recommended installation process.
Before You Begin
You'll Need
- Tape measure (for hardware)
- Level (for hardware)
- Drill (for hardware)
- Screwdriver (for hardware)
- Ladder
- Pencil (for hardware)
- Steamer
- Your Elliston House drapery panels
- Elliston House drapery hardware (or compatible hardware)
Instructions
-
Install Your Drapery Rod
Hang the rod 6–12 inches above the window frame (or just below the ceiling). Extend the rod 6–12 inches beyond each side of the window. Make sure the rod is level
-
Measure Ring Hook
Measure the length of the eye hook on your drapery ring. If the eye hook measures 1/2", the top of the drapery pin should sit 1/2" below the top of the panel.
-
Mark Your Placement
Using that measurement, make a small mark on the back of the panel next to each pleat (with a pencil or erasable fabric marker) measuring down from the top of the drapery panel.
-
Place Your Pins
Insert the pins into the seam of the pleat and one at each end inset about 1/2" from edge of panel. The top of each pin should line up with your measurement mark so they're all positioned at the same height.
-
Ready To Hang
Hook each pin through a drapery ring. The top of your drapery panel should sit below the rod. If it sits too high or comes up over the rod, simply reposition the pins until the height is right.
-
Steam the Pleats
Shipping folds and creases are normal. Allow panels to relax, hanging for 24–48 hours before steaming vertically from top to bottom. Avoid pressing with a hot iron. Natural linen may relax slightly after hanging.
-
Train the Pleats
Fold the pleats neatly by hand. Tie them loosely with ribbon, fabric strips, or soft ties. Leave tied for 24–72 hours if desired. Allow the folds to set naturally.
Note: this step is not required.
Pro Tips
For the most tailored appearance, we recommend:
Installing your rod as high and wide as possible.
Steaming your panels after hanging.
Allowing natural linen to settle for 48–72 hours before making final adjustments.
Taking time to train the pleats for beautifully consistent folds.
